New Club Looks to Spike the Competition

Written by Alex Loding

In March 2018, Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW) added a new club to their more than 40 current clubs and intramural sports.

The Student Government Association (SGA) made Spike Ball an official club at CUW. Club president Jonathan Wong and vice president Jacob Leitner took their love of a fun activity and turned it into a club.

“When I came to Concordia my freshman year I knew that I wanted to keep playing Spike Ball and it seemed like the easiest way to do that would be to make a club,” Wong said.

Wong and Leitner emailed SGA to find out how to make an official club. They created a formal constitution and had to have at least 45 student signatures on an interest form. After showing interest in the club, a formal presentation was given to SGA to hold a vote. Spike Ball was then named an official club.

“The hardest part about creating the club was having people who don’t know what Spike Ball is and going up to them to sign a piece of paper,” Leitner said. “The hardest part was trying to sell them on the idea.”

Leitner and Wong have big plans for Spike Ball.

“This club brings the opportunity to learn about a fun sport while building relationships with new people,” Wong said. “My intentions are to build up the club and hopefully be the biggest club on campus.”

Wong and Leitner organize the promotions and recruitment for the club. The club looks to expand in popularity with flyers and word of mouth.

“We are looking to get in as many events as possible and every weekend get a group out there playing and creating tournaments,” Leitner said. “We want to see who the top dogs are.”

Spike Ball events are held in the Catalyst Sports Complex on weekends from 7 to 8 PM. To join the club or learn more about it, contact Jonathan Wong at jonathan.wong@cuw.edu or Jacob Leitner at jacob.leitner@cuw.edu.
